Persuading women to ask
Researchers have found that women don't ask for what they want as often as men do, and that this causes problems in their professional and personal lives. In their book Women Don’t Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide, Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever outline the problem and give steps to correct it. Because their book had a huge impact on me, I wanted to share my knowledge with other young women starting out in their careers. The resulting animation describes the problem in detail, but it also gives positive, empowering steps toward change. I chose to write the text from a woman's point of view and to use inclusive language. The animation features 2 distinct voices: the narrator's voice (mine), and quotes from women, which are distinguished using typography and placement. The women's quotes are accompanied by silhouettes, to emphasize that all women struggle with this issue, regardless of race, class, or age.
